Hi Nathan
As a regular (once a year) eater of surströmming I see that a few things of
your experience was ”correct ” alas eating on crisp bread, the herring should
preferably be in small pieces, with butter and potatoes. And maybe a strong
tasting hard cheese, leek or onion and maybe sliced tomatoes. Drink beer. Maybe
even some kind of schnapps.
But there is one major failure on the table. The container should never be on
the table. Preferably it should be opened under water. There is no nice things
to be said about the smell.
And yes, it is an acquired taste. And once a year is enough if you ask me.
