I totally agree. I'm certainly not as "evolved" as some photographers
and I need to see/work in the medium desired for the outcome. My
compositions are different. When I'm shooting in color, I look for the
contrasts and lighting for color. When I'm shooting in B&W, I look for
the contrasts and lighting for B&W. While I am perfectly able to do a
conversion to B&W later on, it rarely works out because I didn't
actually compose that way up front.
I think the point, in my case, is that I've never really been a B&W photographer. When I wanted to learn photography as
a young man, I was very frustrated. I wanted to work in COLOR, and simply couldn't afford to.
I do occasionally see something I think would look good in B&W, and shoot
color, for later adjustment. :-)
Speaking of evolved, I don't understand how photographers can shoot,
edit, print/publish, and move on and consider it all a done deal. I
only delete the obvious outtakes and leave everything else in my
files. When revisiting the files later on, I'll look at the pictures
with fresh eyes and fresh usage intent.

I have virtually everything I've ever shot on digital in my LR catalog. I just mentioned the Panny 42.5/1.7 in a post,
got curious what I'd shot with it, set a metadata filter in LR, browsed, and noticed a photo I'd not processed before

I sometimes just wander about in the catalog, looking at stuff from the past.
I've found gems.
And with fresh conversion/editing tools which may give me options that didn't
exist previously.
Really true for me. I've recently recovered a film shot from ~2002, the convertible in the redwoods photo I just posted,
and made big improvements in digital shots from 2012
