The Sony 70-300/4.5-5.6 is not that much heavier than the 24-105.
The Sony 24-105/4 is rather large and heavy, compared to the 24-120 mm eq. PLeica 12-60 for µ4/3, but significantly
lighter than the FF Canon 24-105/4.
What I like is the close focus on it means a macro lens is not required for
most of the things I would use macro for.
Close focus and "macro" are interesting things between formats. This Sony lens has a max mag. of 0.3x, the same as the
Pleica 12-60. However, if I shoot something 10 mm in diameter @ MM on both, then print them @ 8x10", the image from the
Sony is ~26.5 mm and that from the µ4/3 is ~47 mm in diameter.
The effective magnification of the smaller format lens/sensor is about 175%
that of FF.
Then there's another thing about lens design that's not obvious from basic specs. At which FL does max magnification
happen on the Sony? A cursory search didn't tell me.
I have both PL 12-60 and Oly 12-100 zooms. Both have a max mag. of 0.3x. BUT, the PL is at 60 mm and for the Oly it's @
12 mm. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Closest focus is 150 mm. but wait, there's more! From focal plane to physical front
of lens is 138 mm. But wait, yet more; with hood on, the long 'petal' is 166 mm from film plane. In other words, closest
focus and max. magnification occur INSIDE the hood!
From a previous Moose Whine:

. . . This afternoon, there were a couple of shots I wanted to take. I grabbed the camera, went out and shot, without
even noticing which lens was on the body.
. . . so I went to take a shot [of a flower].
Eeek! I've got the 12-100, and can't get much magnification without throwing the shadow of the honkin' great front of
the lens on the subject. Then there's a dahlia starting to bloom, and a cute bud, just starting to burst open, right
there. Same problem, but I take a shot.
Run in the house, change lenses, return to the scene of the crime. I get both shots the way I want them.

Yes, I believe Oly, that I could, theoretically, get the same size image as with the PLeica. And maybe if I take off the
lens hood, and maybe use a tripod to get close enough and hold the lens there, maybe some fill light, or a different
time of day . . . but I just couldn't get the shots, standing there with camera in hand and subjects ready. I believe
the shading of the front of the bud with the Oly is lens shadow.
Practical upshot is that the Oly doesn't do a kind of shooting that's important to me without fussing at least with an
auxiliary lens or tube. The PLeica just does it, no fuss, no bother, on to the next thing.

The same problem existed with some film days "macro" zooms.
Someday I will learn how to take photos and share something.
Sounds like fun!
