AF was their big failure, of course. But optically, these lenses just didn’t
compete as they should have, against even the Manual focus canons of the day
(300/2.8, etc.) Frankly I don’t think internal focus or flash sync had much to
do (if anything) with the success/failure of the OM large teles.
Canon’s AF was kick-ass, right out of the gate, on the lenses with USM (which
included their fast teles.). It was unsurpassed, silent, uber-fast and
accurate. Even today their 1st gen teles hold their own image-wise, and are
still just as fast at AF as the current generation.
