I managed to get the battery cover off. I took a large washer that was
the thickness of the slot, then turned it down on the lathe to the same
diameter of a quarter. After some careful effort the cover came off. I should
replace that cover since the edges of the slot are badly worn.
There are no batteries inside, so I'll need to get a pair of LR44 or G13
cells.
