Ken, this may not be a problem in Iowa, but I noticed one negative
effect when I doubled the insulation in the attic. There is not enough
heat gain in the house to trigger the A/C unless I turn the thermostat
down to around 75F, so the humidity tends to build up.
I do remove a lot of the attic heat load with an attic vent fan.
This is not a problem for me, but my late wife got chilled when I
dropped the thermostat.

Our house was built with staggered split stud construction. 2x6 outer, 2x4
inner. 10 inches of insulation and no common stud connection between inner
and outer except at the boundaries. when it was built, it also had 18
inches of insulation in the attic. We will get that addressed as it has
settled, but we may take it up to 24 inches or more.
