Hi Chuck,
I'm sure you are right. But, for distinctive objects, I prefer to do
better. I guess that comes from being an old rangefinder shooter. For
other cases, the DoF scales do just fine. This rig, while dating from
the 1950s, will nail the focus every time.

Your focusing difficulty with wide angle lenses is probably due to
depth of field. At as close as 5 feet your 28mm Elarit-R (42mm equiv)
at f/3.5 has a depth of field extending about 6" fore and aft of the
subject. At 8 feet it extends more than a foot in front of the
subject and 1-1/2 feet behind the subject. Will the true focus please
stand up!

Judging from my own experience with focusing wide-angle lenses on the
X-E1, these are probably the lenses that need split image help the most.

As for the split image feature I can only get that to work with the 14
/ 2.8 and 23 / 1.4 Fujinons .... both of which allow for manual
focusing.
