Interesting comments, Nathan. I only have the X-E1 in-hand at this
time, but have found some similar results. The 50 Summicron-R and 60
Elmarit-R Macro focus fairly easily with focus peaking, but the 28
Elmarit-R is a pain. However, the elderly Summaron 35/3.5 LTM, with its
nice scales, is ideal for zone focusing. I have been happy with its images.

I see that while I have been out on my 2-hour after-work bike ride, you got the
responses and figured things out for yourself. The only thing I have to add is
that when mounting a Leica (or any other M) lens, you have to set the switch in
front to manual focus. Also, my experience is that I can reliably focus the
90mm Leica Elmarit on the X-T1, somewhat less reliably the 50mm Summilux, but
anything wider is not worth the trouble.

I think it should be that the lens is in manual focus mode. I have two auto /
manual focus lenses ...... the 14mm / f2.8 and the 23mm / f1.4.
When these lenses are changed into manual focusing mode [by pulling the focus
ring towards the camera body] and the 'Focus Assist' button is pressed the
shooting / MF assist options scroll across the screen. Press three times and
the split image option appears. In both the EVF and on the screen that grey
rectangle appears with a close up of the to-be-focused-upon area with the two
horizontal out of focus area clearly visible. Rotate the lens's focusing ring
until the image is in focus and fire. Viola ... ! Not quite as good as the
split image viewfinder in the M3 or the OM4T but quite a boost from having to
rely solely on auto focusing.
No to see if I can achieve the same result with a manual focus Leica M lens. I
rather suspect that the split image feature only works with manually focusing
Fujinon lenses built for the XPro 1, X-T1 and subsequent generations of those
cameras.

Don't have an X-T1, but I have been confounded by the X-Pro1 in similar
circumstances. The clue is in the opening sequence of your Youtube clip, and
in Nathan's response. If it's the same as the X-Pro1, you MUST have the
camera in MF mode before you can use the MF assist features. I assume it's a
rotary switch on the front left of the camera.

Jim ....
here is another video pertaining to the X-T1.
As hard as I try I am unable to replicate the horizontal side to side
split image seen on the full area of the X-T1's screen.
In fact I am unable to get into split screen mode by an extended period
of pressing the 'Focus Assist' button.

Hi John,
First, thank you for the link. I am considering purchasing an X-T2, and
this contained a lot of interesting information.
Secondly, my takeaway from this is that the term, "split image", can
have multiple meanings. As shown in the video, I don't find it to be
"rangefinder-like" at all. It shows the full image on the left, and a
magnified center portion on the right. The camera has several ways of
enhancing the contrast of the magnified image, making focusing easier.
But, if one is expecting a split image such as that provided by a Leica
rangefinder camera, I did not find it.

This is referred to here:

about half way down the article in the paragraph headed "Manual
Focusing".
If anyone is familiar with this focusing method on the X-T1 could they
please advise me how I bring the split image focusing method into play.
If it is at all relevant I have a Konica M-Hexanon 50mm f2 lens.
Thanks
