Your focusing difficulty with wide angle lenses is probably due to depth
of field. At as close as 5 feet your 28mm Elarit-R (42mm equiv) at
f/3.5 has a depth of field extending about 6" fore and aft of the
subject. At 8 feet it extends more than a foot in front of the subject
and 1-1/2 feet behind the subject. Will the true focus please stand up!

Judging from my own experience with focusing wide-angle lenses on the
X-E1, these are probably the lenses that need split image help the most.

As for the split image feature I can only get that to work with the 14
/ 2.8 and 23 / 1.4 Fujinons .... both of which allow for manual focusing.
