It appears that those gupdate services were the culprits. I've had the
laptop sitting in front of me online for three hours now and there hasn't been
any illicit internet activity.
I read at one site that you inherit these whenever you install Google
Chrome, the Google Toolbar, or Google Earth. I had the last of those on this
machine a few years ago but removed it to make space for design software.
