Well Ian,
- texting is forbidden for one, sanction: 150USD and three points out of the 12
a full license has
http://www.legipermis.com/infractions/telephone-au-volant.html
- Randomization of speed limits : adjusting the speed limit and the displays
makes sense when traffic is too dense, and/or when weather conditions poor - we
have these around Strasbourg and work very well, well, less worse than it could
be.
Lowering the global speed on congested roads is a scientifically proven way to
increase fluidity, allowing more traffic in the same time period. Adapting it
according to the circumstances may not be that stupid after all. Now, I can't
see the point about radars if you stick to the prescribed speed limit, and
that's what speed limiter/cruise control is for, is it not?
- RADARs: Electronic warfare and counter-measures devices used against the law
enforcement authorities duly results in the confiscation of the vehicle.
6 points off the license (min) + 1500€ max fine + 3 years' prohibition to drive
any vehicle (max) + seizure of the equipment + seizure of the vehicle (you even
have to pay for parking it for the duration of the seizure ...).
Makes you think twice before buying one (which is also forbidden, and punished
by the law).

Hope this helps you better understand the local environment if and when you
cross the border :-)
OTT : I hate German motorways - you ride a mighty 200 km/h for 10 km and
invariably end up in a 15mn STAU! So tiring and so boring.
I prefer the Swiss 120km/h speed limit that allows to constantly and smoothly
glide without stress nor loss of time.
Amities
Philippe, who tries to leave on time, drive relax, and safely arrive on time,
the funny bit being that neither Alice nor I have ever had so powerful and
comfortable cars, and yet so few tickets ;-)
