At least when hydrogen burns you only get water vapour, of course if the
fire spreads to other materials you'll probably get worse.

They talked a lot about the safety of the tanks in the car, but not about
storage and refueling.

Hydrogen storage at high pressure is conventional tech. And refueling is
pretty well tested. Our local public transportation system, AC Transit, ran
an earlier test with two buses and now has twelve running regular routes,
fueled daily. One is up over 200,000 mi. So they pretty much know that the
fueling connections work. In fact, the only close station for us would be at
the AC Transit yard, where they have added a public refueling station.

It may be useful to remember that hydrogen, unlike many flammable gasses, is
much lighter than nitrogen and oxygen. Any leak would shoot up and away
faster than a hydrogen balloon.

Remember the Hindenburg, and that the films show only the fire in the
covering fabric and the gondola. The hydrogen fire, which was started by the
conventional fire, burned almost invisibly above the frame, doing no damage
on its own.
