I wish my results with the 75-300 were as good. I don't think it's the lens. Either vibration (me) or focus or both. Actually, maybe insufficient DoF if I'm wavering back and forth. I just checked a shot that was almost good enough and see the the aperture at 300mm was f/6.7 at about 30 feet. f/9 as you're using would have given me about a foot DoF rather then the 6" or so that I got a f/6.7.

A couple more tries. I shot a new to us bird in Fern Canyon, Van Damme

Merlin got it, Wilson's Warbler. Note, deeply shaded canyon, low
overcast, a bit of light rain, 275 mm @ 1/80 sec.
With a second bird, I couldn't get nearly as good a shot, and it had few
markings. <http://zone-10.com/tope2/main.php?g2_itemId=17831>

Merlin had more trouble; best guess is a Warbling Vireo, after looking
at t bunch of pics.

Not quite as clear, but 300 mm @ 1/20 at a longer distance! Ya' thing
the IBIS works?
