About 2 years ago I bought a bottle of Oban single malt. I had
previously visited Oban and the distillery so was familiar with the
name. I'd never previously taken to Scotch or bourbon so it has been a
very slow process of acclimation. Now, after 2 years, the bottle is
nearing empty.
Recently, a good friend and Scotch lover, who had been with me in Oban
and urged me to buy the Oban in the first place, came for a visit to
South Carolina from his normal place in the frozen north. Concerned
that I might actually run out of single malt he came bearing gifts. One
was a bottle of Oban Little Bay and the other a bottle of Laphroaig.
The Little Bay has yet to be tasted. The Laphroaig has been tasted
once. Yes, I was warned that it would taste like a campfire but was
still surprised to see that it actually did. :-) Perhaps in another 2
years I will have become accustomed to Lahproaig.

Bob, your story is almost identical to my own, which I find quite amazing.
There's some difference in details, but that's about it. And I also, am
mostly a beer as food and one scotch an evening sort of guy, now.
And to Paul: Whisk(e)y is definitely an acquired taste, IMO. For me, the
incentive to keep trying different varieties was the fact that so many
folks consistently praised one brand or another. Eventually, I found a few
I liked.

Everyone gets different mileage. I was a real abuser in my youth, and quit
for a long time. Now I’m a drink-in-the-evening kind of guy. Haven’t been

My body has turned on caffeine, so I can’t appreciate good coffee in any
of its many forms, except for decaf, which hardly counts. I think I might
trade the Scotch for a high caffeine tolerance. Emphasis on _might_.
I got so ploughed under my first year of college I came to in the army.
That’s a slight exaggeration only.

For drink snobbery, I've turned my focus to tea and coffee. But in all
