What I meant was that if the legislatures in either Hawaii or Alaska were dominated by separatists and they declared that they had a mandate to leave the Union then federal Washington would sit back and say nothing...yeah right. Well the US has pretty much sorted that possibility out with the Civil War. The closest N. American equivalent would be Le Parti Québécois. The Canadian provinces have much more autonomy than US states do. I don't fully understand the relationship between England, Scotland, Wales etc. It sure has been muddled by a long history. Clearly looser than that of the Canadian provinces to Ottawa but tighter than Sovereignty Association. Looks like the Scottish election will a nail-biter just like the last election in Québéc. Best summation that I heard in Scotland was to either vote your heart or your pocketbook. I'm glad that I don't have to make the choice.
