Standard ATF (except for the garbage used in Fords) and brake fluid
are nearly identical. ATF has other additives in it now that have no
affect on this application.

Even straight brake fluid or ATF does a decent job, but is a bit thick
unless it is cut with acetone. I believe the chain used in ATF is too
long. But I'm not a molecular scientist.
