WD-40 is widely misunderstood. I suppose that, once the misunderstanding became
wide spread, the makers advertised to
take advantage of it.
"WD" stands for "water displacement" and "40" is the number of the formula
tried which finally worked. It was designed
to displace moisture and protect surfaces from rust. Although it does contain a
light lubricant, it doesn't last long in
actual lubrication uses. Nor, as this tests shows, is it particularly effective
in loosening rusted threads.
Put what a wonderful product to have people believe in! Use it, and the squeak
disappears, only to soon reappear, and
require more application of the product.
If one needs a spray lubricant, there are lubricant sprays based on lithium
grease, Teflon, etc. that are far superior.
