I suspect that you are confusing 'soul - animating principle', with 'soul - mind' there (daimon). The distinction between soul, spirit ad mind has always been knotty. I always used to argue that 'eudaimonia' - a core concept of the Greeks, should not be translated as 'happiness' but simply as what it is - a state of being in 'good-spirits'. A much more useful concept.
