My city is also trying to become more cycle friendly, and I'm not pleased.
It would seem that riding a cycle causes everyone's IQ to fall
precipitously, and the riders seem to think they are totally relieved of
observing the traffic laws. Run red lights? Sure! Go the wrong way on a
one-way street? Yup! Make unsignaled lane changes where you make a big
sweeping curve across two or three lanes of traffic in front of moving cars?
Sure, I'm immune from danger. What is it about bicycles? Is it the same
thing that makes Prius drivers go sooooo slooooow?

Thanks for the commiseration, Chris. The ordinance is that cyclists must
yield to pedestrians. That is subject to some interpretation. It is more
obvious what to do when coming face to face with pedestrians, but more
tricky trying to pass around me when headed in the same direction I find
that shouting causes them to move in completely unpredictable ways,
disturbs their peace, slows me down terribly, and generally creates two
annoyances -- the shouting and the actual passing. If they are
sufficiently to one side or the other I just pass them quickly. It they
are startled, it is only one annoyance that way. I would use a bell, but I
haven't figured out how to mount one on drop handlebars (but I haven't
tried very hard either).
This town is trying to become more and more friendly to cycling. But
essentially everyone hates cyclists unless they cycle themselves. I yield,
I apologize, I thank them, but I persist. And I know my rights.
