I've never used an F280 or any other flash that provides high speed
sync. But for cameras such as the OM-D with minimum ISO of 200 it would
seem to be mandatory for fill flash. Simple "sunny 16" rule says ISO
200 needs shutter speed of 1/200 for full sun which is close to the max
sync speed of 1/250. Unfortunately, looking at the manual for the F280
gives absolutely no guidance on practical shooting distances. The only
shooting distance table discussed under Super FP mode says it *does not
include the effect of ambient light* !! Say what!! Umm, when exactly
does one use fill flash except under substantial ambient light?
Canon is not quite as bad. The total discussion of high speed synch
mode consists of only 7 sentences but the flash unit itself does display
the available distance range when in high speed synch mode.
Unfortunately the specifications chart (just like Oly) is moot on the
subject. The only way to know is to have a flash in your possession and
mounted on a camera.
Then I decided to check current Oly flash manuals on the OlympusAmerica
web site. Hah! There are none!
