I thought it's because the iris closes down when camera shuts down, to protect
the sensor from bright light inadvertently being focussed on it (no shutter to
block it). Iris opens on camera power up. Whether or not it had anything to do
with protecting the sensor is conjecture, but the iris open/close on camera
power status I saw every time.
