Too cynical? Not entirely. After all the unethical and sometimes
criminal nonsense I witnessed while working, I'm open to any source of
sabotage. It's an acquired attitude. Even Jesus Christ doesn't walk on water
anymore. He's got holes in his feet. :{b
I've been going through all of the favorites in Firefox to see which sites
I visited yesterday morning. I was doing that to recover the little icons for
each site. For the most part, I did that for search engines, and the only one
common to IE8 and Firefox that I visited was Google. The only other sites were
related to books (ABE, Alibris, Amazon, and Bookfinder) and NOAA/NWS weather
products. Of all those, all I can think of having visited that's common to IE8
and Firefox would be Amazon, Bookfinder, and NOAA/NWS. Unless, of course, it
was somehow piggy-backed on an eBay visit, which is entirely possible.
It took a while along the learning curve, but I deleted all of the cookies
and temporary files for Firefox, and the features on eBay all returned
immediately. The problems were undoubtedly related to a cookie, which was
downloaded into IE8 on Tuesday morning and into Firefox on Thursday morning. I
know I visited Google, Amazon, Bookfinder, and NOAA/NWS on both mornings.
Now that I've narrowed this down to a renegade cookie, the next time it
happens I'll archive the cookie and cache folders, purge the active folders,
then go though the archived ones with a fine-toothed comb. I should be able to
pick out the renegade cookie by way of the time stamp, then I can block the
source.
I should probably download and install the latest third-party HOSTS file.
