Irene reached category 3 status while over the Bahamas and was still a
category 1 when it reached Cape Hateras. It had been predicted to reach
category 4 status before reaching Cape Hateras, but never made it. It was
barely a category 1 storm when it reached the DelMarVa Penisula, and then
dropped to tropical storm status.
