Thanks for the comments, Andrew. I don't have the grip, so my experience is
with the camera alone. After posting this question, to see if my experience
was unusual, I did read the manual. The only recommendation there is to
recharge the battery.
I had been using a battery until I noted a change in the battery icon. I
would then swap batteries. Since my camera, which had been misbehaving
earlier, worked perfectly with a fresh battery, I have concluded that the
shutter, with its power draw, is much more sensitive than the "low battery"
icon. I will now swap batteries when the problem surfaces once more, as I
am sure it will.
As to the modes and filters, I never get past P, A, and M. S might be
useful for sports photography. To me, anything else is just a gimmick.
Thinking about it, perhaps that is why I love the uncluttered E-1.
