There should be no concern about copyright violation in an image that's
about 130 years old and whose owners have been out of business for 65-70
years. Furthermore, if there was actual concern about copyright it
would have been sufficient to simply say so. Copyright was never mentioned.
They do ask you to rate your skill level but I was allowed to select any
of perhaps a dozen or so images. I don't completely understand the
process yet but it appears that groups of images (maybe 10-20) are
assigned to a coordinator who points you to a set of images to choose
from. The coordinator keeps track of you and the image. Some of these
seem to be related to promise dates. The one I was working on (I think)
was of some special interest since it was the last of a set of images
being restored for a particular family. Completion had apparently been
promised by some particular date.
I thought the particular image I chose was within my skill level but
there were some that clearly were not or, if they were, I was not
willing to say I'd do it in a week. Some of the restorers are clearly
very expert. Restoring images where there doesn't seem to be any way to
fill the missing areas. For example, in this restoration
<http://www.chucknorcutt.com/restoration.php> I was able to restore the
heavily damaged eye and lashes by using parts of the reversed opposite
eye. But I at least had something to work with. I know that some
images have been restored by searching the web for other similar
material to get enough bits to copy and re-size to fill in the missing bits.
Good luck. Lets us know how to get along.
