'Gift' is an obvious lie and I ask sellers not to do it in case it annoys the
customs people. Low value is fine but if it goes missing, you've got an
insurance problem. Best technique I developed with high value shipments to the
EU was to claim that it was being returned after a repair or modification and
declaring a lowish price for the service. For instance, i sold a Canon body to
someone in Germany which had a split focussing screen fitted - I included an
invoice for an $80 modification and declared an insurance value of over $1000.
Seemed to work fine as he paid VAT on the $80 only!
