The SanDisk recovery software was 100% successful in finding all the
missing CR2 files after running it in admin mode and correcting it's
idea of the disk size (by replacing its size number with the Windows
value). It did identify some garbage beyond the last file as an
additional CR2 file of impossibly large size but that was OK. I'm sure
it would have recovered everything but I just wasn't willing to pay the
freight. The error in the reported disk size when Windows gave the
correct size was a bit worrying though.
