I read about the sound systems you guys have as if they are in another
world.
I have a Sanyo integrated setup I bought second-hand about 20 years ago
for about $180 and I'm pretty happy with it; at the same time I will never
have a room dedicated to sound; it's a battle to have a crowded study of my
own, so having a ??35 watt system in a crowded small room works fine.
The Sanyo doesn't have a model number that I can easily find, but it has a
turn-table, tuner, and tape-deck. I had the nylon gears on the double tape
deck replaced about 5 years ago, so that works fine again. I still have to
find
the latest situation about replacing pick-up needles for the vinyls - I have
many LPs 50 & + years old still in excellent condition..
There are 2 speaker boxes 70 cm high, with 3 speaker cones in each, and
the system has sliders for +/- volumes for 50Hz, 250 Hz, 1 kHz, 4.5 kHz and
15kHz which are great for allowing me to adjust any errant recordings to my
taste. The sound is crisp and has no vices I can detect.
The tuner covers all the AM and FM stations I need and has 9 memory
functions for each.
I bought a Technics SL PJ28 CD player 2nd hand for $11 and it works very
well !!
Just because it is there, I went into an audio etc shop in Cromwell and tried
out some of their systems with a couple of my favourite CDs.
I have NO idea what amplifier systems they had hooked up, but since
Theophany speakers are made in Christchurch (see
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/wired/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501834&objectid=1
0564161
and
http://www.theophany.co.nz/ )
I tried those.
They were great, but at $3000 each, the extra value just wasn't there for me
even if I could consider them right now.
I see the same shop has been advertising ?? Wheatcroft UK speakers at
about $10,000 each, discounted to about $6,000 each. The recession here
must be tough on suppliers of luxury goods.
I didn't ask about amplifiers and other bits I know not wot of. :-)
I have also listened to the HiFi setups of real enthusiasts, and I honestly
can't see enough of a difference to worry about. And NO, I am not deaf; I
have good hearing.
