To me, that's 'cause it isn't a portrait. :-) I think of a portrait as a
photograph where there is no story beyond
that told by the subject, clothes and perhaps props. Here, there is a rich
story, and that the man is looking towards
imagined others expands more than if he were looking at the camera.

Which is a good part of what makes it a story.
