Only the AAA data has free updates, not the maps.
Magellan is as or more rapacious on their map updates as anyone else. I bought
a refurb so the maps were already a year
out of date. Now it appears they have stopped updating them for my older unit.
As I recall, I can now update 5-6 year
old maps to 1-2 year old maps for about $60.
The only time older maps has made any difference was around JFK airport, where
they have apparently rejiggered and
renamed some access roads. As soon as we got clear of the immediate area, it
got unconfused and took us efficiently to
our Brooklyn destination.
I figure I'll just buy another refurb when we are ready to hit the roads next
year. Refurb prices bounce around a bit,
but are generally little more than a map update for an even older unit.
Actually, I would consider another brand or model these days, as the AAA info
doesn't include the Camping/RV books and
the lodging info is of little interest now. We are either in the RV or staying
with family and friends. The only place
where we pay for accommodations is in Brooklyn, where the internet and
telephone are better for sussing out B&Bs than is
AAA.
