I've been in relatively low profile mode recently on this list. Life
continues to be faced head on , head into the wind and at the speed of light.
Spend last weekend at Norfolk Virginia Navy Base where my cousin was taking
over as Commanding Officer. She is an Annapolis graduate and the first
woman to have command of this, the largest base in the world. She is also a
great wife and mother. Way to go girl!
This would never have happened when I was in the Navy. Change is good.
It would be nice to see this happen globally.
I took about 500-600 images in large jpg format, which is a format I
seldom use. Signed up for a gmail account, downloaded Picasa and will post
some
photos there for friends and family. I've not used a site like this to
post images before.
Spent about 3 hours at the fellows property with the tractors that I've
been photographing the better part of the past six months. It changes with
the seasons and is currently shoulder deep in weeds. I had been using some of
my toy cameras, a Super Ricohflex (2 1/4 square) & Olympus OM 2S. Many of
these have been "portraits" with either normal or short telephoto lenses.
Yesterday, I loaded some HP5 in the OM 2S and attached my Tamron 400mm f4
to the camera and a tripod and took a different approach to recording the
changes in the tractor yard. Shot 2 rolls. Tight crops, selective focus,
isolated parts, relationship to the environment. What fun!
Processed my first roll of film in the new darkroom yesterday. Discovered a
few glitches in the darkroom and in my technique. Fortunately none of the
glitches screwed up my film. Now that is a change. 5 more rolls to do
today.
I'm retiring from my insurance career at the end of the year. The
retirement party has been planned, so I guess it is official . . .
My first Social Security check should arrive in September. I've been
paying in for the past 54 years.
Let's back up to the change of command at Norfolk. At the reception where
there was more brass than I've seen in one place at the same time, there
were many Captains ( for the non-military folks, that is one step below an
Admiral in the Navy) and a few Admirals. As I walked about, taking photos
of these silver haired senior officers, it occurred to me that when I got
out of the Navy in 1968, none of these folks had yet started their careers.
To me it seems like yesterday . . .
So what is next? I'm in the process of applying to graduate school as I'm
not yet complete with this living thing. I'll keep the list posted on the
progress.
