Hi Andrew,
You are absolutely correct. In 1993, following a visit to the dental
assistant for routine prophylactic cleaning, I began running a low-grade
fever. Visits to several doctors failed to find a cause. After getting
worse during a trip, 1200 miles from home, we made a difficult drive home.
The next morning my wife took me to a Nashville specialist who admitted me
to a hospital. After a lot of searching, they found the problem. I had
endocarditis, an infection of the heart near the mitral valve. It required
the use of two of the most powerful antibiotics available, taken together,
to clear up the infection. I later had to have open heart surgery to clean
up the resulting mess and install two mechanical heart valves.
As a result of this, I have two rules that must be followed:
Use Coumadin every day to maintain a clot-free circulatory system.
Take 3 grams of Amoxicillin before any invasive procedure, to assure that
there is no repeat of the infection. This is usually recommended for
patients with any sort of replacement device where bacteria can find a
crevice.
