Never had a projector with that lens. I do have one with Kodak 4"
(102mm) Ektanon f2.8 and a quirky little Rollei projector with Rollei
lens. I also have Kodachrome 25 slides taken with a very sharp lens.
My personal opinion is that such a combo would be less obviously clear
and sharp projected at the same size next to my Samsung 61" HDTV.
Although the slide image may be very sharp, the grain would be quite
evident and the overall dynamic range less than that of the subject,
with highlights and shadows missing.
The image on a good HDTV with a good source is almost breathtaking in
clarity. If you have only seen DVD on an older HD set, for example, you
haven't seen anything. The dynamic range of both capture and display
exceed slide film with projector, to my eyes, with the capture range
especially important in making the images lifelike.
Yes, HD has weaknesses, especially compressed via cable or satellite.
You can see some material that has been compressed to the point that
artifacts are visible in dark, low detail areas, much like JPEG
artifacts in skies. Mostly though, the compressed image from the
satellite is indistinguishable from that of the OTA HD signal, where I
have both available.
Sometimes weather or airplanes can lead to usually momentary break-ups
in the satellite picture. Then again, my slides always have dust spots
and most aren't glass mounted, so the corners and edges of the 'pillow'
shaped slide aren't quite sharp with a flat field lens that fast.
But you asked about the best in slide projection, so I compare it to the
best in HD. To me, HD is better. Some of the aerial pans used as setting
shots on dramas are so 3D seeming that it looks like one could fall into
them. Skin blemishes, larger than life, clear as day, in my living room!
And yes, it all holds up well when the DVR is paused.
