I went with an inverter in my truck for the simple reason that I could
just plug anything in and not have to worry about a tangle of converters
for this or that. It was also cheaper than buying the AC-DC converter
for each appliance. The added benefit I could charge cordless tools and
even power small widgets. For more capacity add a deep cycle marine
battery and switch. Rather than use the clunky cigarette lighter socket
you can just get the correct socket from Radio Shack and do a nice clean
install in a more convenient place. I did this on my boat so I could
plug in a Walkman etc. anywhere. Don't forget a solar panel. The
technology is getting pretty good. A lot of boaters are using them. The
most expensive part is the electronics to keep from cooking the battery.
If a person is careful no expensive electronics are needed.
