An argument that they could be accessing the usb interface. If it were 
another bus I believe you would need to force a rescan for it to be 
recognized as The Moose suggests.

For the amount of photos I take in a day the usb cord directly from the 
camera works just fine. Don't really need to carry around any more 
gadgets and gizmos. 8gb uploads in a reasonable amount of time.
