First, remember that the example was NOT about optimal NR for full pixel
use nor for printing. I was strictly commenting on minimizing grain
effects in a highly reduced image for the web.
That said, and moving now to pixel peeping and/or large display sizes -
sure, I run into that sort of thing all the time. It's a little crazy
making for a perfectionist. I've tried making standard NI profiles for
various cameras, ISOs, films, etc. But settings that work for one
subject will sometimes just not work for another.
I think our visual systems respond strongly to sharp edges as indicating
sharpness, so grain adds apparent detail in some areas without it.
