The numbers are a little different, but this is a trick of the trade I use
when digitizing film images. I know what I can squeeze out of my E-1 images
at a lowly 5MP, so if I take a huge scan (48MP or so), apply a tiny bit of
gaussian blur (a poor man's AA filter), then downsize to 25-50% of original,
then sharpen I get images at a nice manageable size and the grain structure
is greatly minimized.
But I will say that a well-done scan of K25 at 4000dpi is something to
behold.
