In 1985 I went to USSR with my brother for a holiday, In those days it
was quite an adventure and there was lots of propoganda going on by both
sides, as I found when I took a suitcase full of levi's only to find
out they had moved to trainers and digital watches ;-( anyway I
digress, when it came time to return home we were given strict
instructions that we were not allowed to take currency out with us. I
decided that I would also like a souvenir of a glass from one of the
hotels we had stayed in, the glass was different in that the rim was
just literally cut sharp even, not rounded like western glasses, anyway
I packed this and some roubles into my brothers bag ( I had told him)
and we headed for the airport, as we approached the armed border guards
the tour rep reminded us that we mustn't leave with any roubles and they
would now do a very thorough search so my brother handed me the bag and
said "you can carry this through" - I was only 25 and didn't fancy a
life in the saltmine, but I took the bag and nervously approached the
passport control, only to be waved through without so much as a glance,
those naughty ruskies had been winding us up.
while we are on the subject of that holiday another clever thing those
ruskies did was with flights, when you asked how long it would take they
would say 4 hours, when you got your ticket it would say 3.5 hours, then
when you boarded the captain said flying time would be 3 hours and then
the flight actually only took 2.5 hours, clever bit of psycology that !!
