As I get older and more eccentric bokeh has become one of the more 
important issues with any lens I use . Maybe the most important. I'll 
give up sharpness or live with distortion for great bokeh. If you can't 
afford the best then I guess you gotta make what you do have work. The 
two kit lenses with the E510 aren't that great but neither are they 
terrible. They do have other features like AF which make them more 
useful than the 135/4.5 which has beautiful bokeh but is hard for me to 
focus even with a tripod. Here is one example shot @ f8 for a bit more 
DOF of subject but also starts to show the splotchy background. Perhaps 
gaussian blur needed.

Here's another with busy background elements. Some work with the clone 
tool or blurring might help. The ISO at 400 adds a little noise which 
isn't bad in this case I think. Make the equipment minuses work in your 
favor.

The trick for me is to get rid of the annoying background altogether. 
Maybe too stark but better than the alternative IMO. Generally  -0.3 to 
-0.7ev.
