The math I see for an E-3 is:
Cost to Olympus from factory in China.........................350 tops
Mark up on cost thru wholesale chain to the retailer....1150
Mark up by retailer .....................................................200
Retail cost to customer...............................................1700
The Olympus rebates are borne by Olympus out of the 1150 of mark up. A $100
rebate out of 1150 is very small beer indeed and is likely based on the
costs of stocking and handling inventory that could otherwise be sold. In
all likelihood Olympus is further ahead financially by making a $100 rebate
than it is holding unsold inventory which ties up capital.
The reason that China is such an enticement is the pitifully low sweat shop
labour rates paid to workers. The E-3 is a robot / machine made widget
involving little human intervention.
