I did use NiMH cells, but indeed I rebuilt the charger too to prevent
damaging those cells.
I was glad I had a reason to, because the original T-45 charger is one
of the poorest electric (rather than electronic! designs I have ever
seen. Very old-fashioned, and never improved although much better
charging techniques had been developed since years.
IMO The old charger is also lifethreatening to the NiCad cells!
This is what I did:
First I removed all of the electrical parts inside. Good riddance!
Then I put the replacement in: one small circuit board from a state of
art Ericsson cell phone desk charger, designed to recharge NiMH 4-cell
batteries in a sophisticated way. (My old Ericsson SH888 also used
4-cell NiMH packs)
On the front panel I mounted a 6-position rotating switch to connect
the charger electronics to the five 4-cell batteries inside the pack
one after another. Sixth position was for 'off'.
A LED which was part of the Ericsson charger showed red when charging
and green when ready. When green I turned the knob one position to
have the next battery (of five) charged. Charging worked like a dream,
but it asked some attention, i.e. to turn the knob.
OTOH the old and poorly built charger asked for attention too: it
could be very harmful to leave it switched on when the cells were
charged - and there was no proper way to tell if they were!
BTW: (For T-45 owners) I do have a redundant Quantum Turbo set for
sale. In good condition, bur it might need new cells in one or two
years from now. They can be easily replaced.
I also have two brandnew Quantum 1+ packs (for 6 volt appliances).
When interested, let me know off list.
