Even with the price difference it is still much cheaper to operate a diesel
truck than a gas truck. Comparing two similar dump trucks the gas truck got
about 7 mi/gal and the diesel gets about 12mi/gal rolling along empty or
lightly loaded ( i.e. 2 ton or less load). The difference is the diesel
engine and overdrive. The rear end ratio is the same since I swapped the
gears out of the gas truck to the diesel.
My next car will be a diesel if I can find one and am willing to move out of
really cheap cars. -Doug
