Politics normally works, as far as written "grenades" go.
On the subject of grenades: I used to have under my command a Royal
Air Force regiment, a Rapier squadron, and they invited me to observe
several exercise during my tenure. One of them was live firing on
Haltern range in Germany. It was very interesting to see the
precautions that they took to prevent friendly fire (there's another
one you could use to make people cross ...), but maintaining careful
arcs of fire and preventing fellows from straying close to them was
nothing compared to the care with which they practised with grenades.
Grenades are small bits of explosive with fragmentation cases, used
to hurt or maim people; but no one was allowed within 50m, there were
safety people up the kazoo and the preparation for each grenade throw
took about 10 minutes. Then the chap threw from behind a bank and
hit the ground ...
There's nothing like watching professionals at work to give you a
warm feeling.
