I don't have a dog in this fight and others have weighed in on the
specific lens questions (and some they have added?)
One thing hasn't been addressed. In what way are you not getting sharp
images? It's clear from tests and the experience of many here that the
14-54 is a very high quality lens. In fact, I think that at nearly any
setting, it should be sharper than the E-1 can capture, between its
limited pixel resolution and AA filter.
I believe this lens, like other DZs, is designed with an eventual sensor
of something like 14 mp in mind. So if you are disappointed with your
results, I have to conclude that one or more of the following are true,
in no particular order:
1. Your lens isn't well, and needs repair.
2. You are expecting more resolution than the E-1 is capable of.
3. You have a technique problem in use of the equipment.
4. You have sharpening set low in camera or RAW converter and are one of
those who believe that sharpening is somehow impure or cheating.
1 is easy enough to test; try another lens on your camera.
2 is easy to test; try your lens on an E-500 or E-300, with their
greater resolution.
3 is tougher. If you want to post some images that you think should be
sharper, folks here might be able to offer help.
4. Join a support group and learn that sharpening is simply a necessary
part of producing digital images, from scanner or camera. I'm sure there
are detailed technical treatises as to why out there but, like the sun
rising in the East every morning, it's just the way things are. Learn to
use it safely, wisely and well, and enjoy it. :-)
If I've been too flippant, please try to look through that to a quite
serious analysis.
