I don't want to enter a fight ; I appreciate your comments and insider
viewpoint - but I think everybody's entitled to his opinions, and some on the
list have camera needs yet uncovered by Olympus, and some had those needs for
years without any glimpse of hope to see them addressed by Olympus. It's
understandable they've become a bit acid in the waiting process.
That's not a reason either to dismiss any critic as brainless - most are well
thought out and are felt by a number of readers here.
But your post reminded me of a bit of marketing trivia I was taught several
years ago. A study was conducted inside Renault (the french car manufacturer)
at a time when they were not in a very good shape. They were just out of the
governement umbrella, they had a poor lineup of outdated models, and they
were facing a chapter 11 filing (equivalent).
The marketing dept asked a single question to all the employees, from janitors
to top brass. The question was : "what does Renault ?". More than 80% of the
answers was a variant of "Renault builds cars".
This is a wrong answer. Renault SELLS cars. If they don't, they die. This was
drilled into everybody's minds thereafter, and today Renault has become a
profitable company, and they even bought Nissan in the process.
Going back to Olympus, my question then is "what does Olympus sells me" ? The
answer is not obvious. I hope Olympus people are more enlightened than I am,
because I have a strong feeling that Olympus is reluctantly into DSLRs for
fame only, ready to back out at any moment, and would rather stick to
consumer grade compacts as a profit center.
