Mainly larger maximum aperture is going to allow you to use higher shutter
speeds, therefore improving your capability to shoot handheld in low
light.
It might not improve the contrast on a foggy day or the blue tint the way
you expect (sorry if I misinterpret what you wrote). Although it is
certainly possible that your new lens is more contrasty and the images
generally more pleasing.
By the way, I enjoyed looking at your Baffin island photos. Thanks for
sharing these.
