Technically there is only one plane of focus. Everything else is a tradeoff.

Macro especially is difficult, as F22 or F32 gets the DOF but resolution
starts to suffer. So with macro you have to get creative, put the most
significant elements in the same plane, etc. There is always going to
be stuff that goes out of focus, and I'm still experimenting with what
works best. With macro, it is usually a tripod, high iso, or blast-o-flash.
Then you pray/plead to the wind gods for an hour.

There is software that will allow one to combine multiple photos with
different focus points into one high DOF photo, that Marc Lawrence
pointed to last month:

I'm waiting for the version that removes motion blur. If you are savy
with PS, you may be able to figure out a way to do this. My problem
is my macro lens, internal focus, changes focal length as I vary the
focus. If you have a long exposure time, seconds, you can also try
to vary the focus as you expose. Gives a sort of Orton effect.
