One thing to keep in mind is that there are a whole lot of different
progressive manufacturers and products. And the difference can be startling.

Some years ago, I ordered some bifocals as Lenscrafters for a specific
purpose. They were to go over my then new mono vision contacts for
extensive reading, driving at night, etc. I figured even they could get
a simple bifocal right. Wrong, they made them up as progressives. When I
pointed out the error, they said it was their fault, so I could have the
more expensive lenses for no additional charge and that I would love
them. Hated them, went back after a day and had them remade.

A few years later, the monovision wasn't working as well as it had been.
It seems that as my lenses hardened, I had developed an intermediate
distance problem, in between the eye doing close and the one doing
distance. Absent a transplant of a third eye, I let myself be talked
into the then rather new Pentax high end progressives. What a
difference! I put them on, walked out of the place and never used the
contacts again. I've since need to replace them when my vision changed.
I went to a relatively high end optician with lots of experience, not a
discount chain, and who sold several brands and models of progressives.
I went with his recommendation, and have again been very happy with the
results - at least after the lab screwed up the prescription the first
time and then remade them correctly. Oh, AR coatings are really
important too, don't cheap out on that either.

I don't seem to have that problem. I bought quality frames, and I am
pretty easy on them.

I'm not so sure that's the case with mine anymore. It seems they are
strictly fixed focus now. :-)
