I'm using a Gitzo carbon fiber with 3 vs. 4 telescoping leg sections. It is
about the lightest one I've seen recommended. I believe it is the 1257 (I'll
check and post again if my memory is wrong). The newer ones (probably same
model no.) have an anti-rotating leg which would be an improvment.
ReallyRightStuff used to recommend this one as a hiking tripod, but the next
one up the Gitzo line as the one to get if you were going to use big heavy
super-telephotos.
The Tamron 400/4 + 1.4x TC, which I use a lot, was giving me grief with 2
different Bogen heads on Bogen legs. The Acratech + Gitzo hasn't shown any
problems. I've had the big 'white' Zuikos + TCs on it with no noticeable
problem. I actually think the weight of the big Zuikos helps them remain
steady. The only mirror lens I've had on it is a 750/6 which also worked
well.
The two lenses I haven't tried and that I'm a little concerned about are the
vivitar 800/11 solid cat and the Zuiko 1000/11. The long focal length of the
800/11 with very low rotational momentum seems to make it sensitive to wind
(I should hang my backpack from the tripod but don't)

Jeff, which tripod have you found works for you?
I too am a relatively recent A-S convert.
