I've never felt a need for one on an OM. With the Mamiya 7 on a lightweight
tripod the weight gets far enough off center to be of concern ... so when I
got the big ugly C*non I got an L bracket for it. It's not strictly
necessary but after having the wind tip over a tripod with an E-1 mounted at
the cost of about $400, the L bracket seemed like a reasonable trade off.
I also use a long plate as a macro slider. Having an L plate that can be
clamped at either orientation at the end of the slider is another minor
advantage.
The trick of stiching two vertical format pictures from a shift lens
together to form a larger landscape format image works best with an L
bracket ... the lens is kept in the same position by sliding both the camera
and shifting the lens.
YMMV,

Some have said that it eliminates the unstable offset. It seems to be
considered seriously, you need a better ballhead if it will not hold
a camera and small lens to the side. Any lens heavy enough to cause
instability should have its own foot.
So why would anyone want an L bracket?
